Rethinking Rationality

چکیده
This chapter discusses the concept of bounded rationality as it is understood in the tradition of H.A. Simon. Fundamental problems and theoretical issues are presented, with special emphasis on aspiration adaptation theory. Further remarks concern basic modes of decision behavior (like learning and expectation formation), reasoning, and the connection between bounded rationality and motivation.

Rethinking the Rationality Postulates for Argumentation-Based Inference
Much research on structured argumentation aims to satisfy the rationality postulates of direct and indirect consistency and strict (deductive) closure. However, examples like the lottery paradox indicate that it is sometimes rational to accept sets of propositions that are indirectly inconsistent or not deductively closed. This paper proposes a variant of the ASPIC+ framework that violates indi...
متن کاملUnderstanding the Rationality and Responsibility of Science
Against the ideal of value-free science I argue that science is not––and cannot be––value-free and that relevant values are both cognitive and moral. I develop an argument by indicating various aspects of the value-ladenness of science. The recognition of the value-ladenness of science requires rethinking our understanding of the rationality and responsibility of science. Its rationality cannot...
متن کاملMoral Satisficing: Rethinking Moral Behavior as Bounded Rationality
What is the nature of moral behavior? According to the study of bounded rationality, it results not from character traits or rational deliberation alone, but from the interplay between mind and environment. In this view, moral behavior is based on pragmatic social heuristics rather than moral rules or maximization principles. These social heuristics are not good or bad per se, but solely in rel...
متن کاملRethinking Situatedness: Environment Structure in the Time of the Common Code
Common coding proposes a shared representation in the brain between perception, execution and imagination of movement. This neural level representation is considered to support a ‘direct activation’ of action by perception/imagination of movement at the behavioral level. We examine how this two-tier model, where a representation at the neural level supports ‘direct activation’ at the behavioral...

There are different concepts of rationality: specific rationality, normative rationality and instrumental rationality whose limitation covers the holistic rationality and represents the fate of rationality in the West. Thus following Hume reason became the slave of feelings and lost its authority for choosing the goal. In Islamic culture reason with its undeniable background in Shariah enjoy...
